What is the difference between a residential microgrid and a Tesla Powerwall?
A Tesla Powerwall is a consumer-grade battery storage unit — 13.5 kWh of capacity, 11.5 kW continuous output, designed primarily for solar self-consumption and partial-load backup. A residential microgrid is an engineered system that may include Powerwall-class batteries as a component, but also integrates backup generation, a dedicated microgrid controller, whole-home transfer switching, and intelligent load management. A Powerwall is a product. A microgrid is infrastructure.
What is the Generac PWRcell and how does it compare to a microgrid?
The Generac PWRcell is Generac's residential battery storage product — a modular lithium battery system with 9–18 kWh capacity, designed to pair with solar and provide backup for select circuits. It is a consumer battery product, not a microgrid. The critical distinction: the PWRcell does not natively integrate with a Generac standby generator in a coordinated microgrid architecture. A whole-home microgrid requires a dedicated controller that manages all sources — battery, solar, and generator — simultaneously. Generac's PWRgenerator + PWRcell combination approaches this but is still a product stack rather than a custom-engineered system.
Is a Generac PWRcell better than a Tesla Powerwall?
Both are consumer battery products with similar capacity ranges. The Powerwall has a larger installed base and more polished app interface. The PWRcell offers more modular capacity expansion. Neither is a whole-home microgrid solution for large estates — they are partial-load consumer backup products. For properties requiring whole-home continuous coverage, neither product (nor any stack of them) replaces a purpose-engineered residential microgrid.
What is the Enphase IQ Battery and how does it compare to a microgrid?
The Enphase IQ Battery is a modular AC-coupled battery system designed to work with Enphase microinverter solar systems. It provides 3.5–10.5 kWh per unit with a focus on solar self-consumption and brief outage coverage. Like Powerwall and PWRcell, it is a consumer battery product — not a whole-home microgrid. It does not include generator integration or dedicated microgrid control. For small solar installations with low backup requirements, Enphase IQ is a reasonable product. For estate-scale whole-home resilience, it is insufficient.
Why would someone choose a custom microgrid over Powerwall, PWRcell, or Enphase?
Property owners may choose a custom microgrid when packaged products cannot meet property-specific coverage, load, integration, and runtime requirements.
